The influence of different cultures has always been an important issue to the growth and advancement of Britain. In the 14th Century, Flemish weavers were welcomed by Edward III to help develop the cloth industry. In the 17th Century 100,000 French Protestants known as the Huguenots fled the persecution of Louis XIV, seven of the twenty-four founders of the Bank of England were Huguenots.
And finally not forgetting the largest European street carnival Notting Hill, which originated from dances in halls organised by the editor of the West Indian Gazette, Claudia Jones and with the vision of social worker Rhaune Laslett was put onto the streets in 1964.
