Overview
Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is a 1990 sequel to the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). It stars Kate Hodge, Ken Foree, and a pre-Lord of the Rings Viggo Mortensen. It was directed by Jeff Burr. At the time this was considered to be the first of several sequels in the series to be produced by New Line. However, it was not a success and the franchise was scrapped (although an additional sequel appeared later it was not made or distributed by New Line). Many horror buffs consider ''Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III'' to be the finest sequel in the series, but only in its uncut version which was finally released on DVD format in 2003. After stopping for gas and directions at a service station on the backroads of Texas; two friends on a cross country trip from California to Florida are harassed by the store's owner. A hitchhiker there, named Tex Viggo Mortensen, takes up for them and is shot by the store owner. After seeing Tex get gunned down, the couple flees the area using a "shortcut" Tex had told them about before he was shot. Soon after taking the shortcut, a mysterious truck forces them off the road into an accident with an SUV. The SUV owner (played by Ken Foree) is a survivalist who is armed to the teeth. The mysterious truck shows up again and all three accident victims abandon their vehicles and flee to a home in the woods, which happens to be owned by a family of cannibalistic serial killers, including Tex and his brother, the infamous chainsaw-wielding maniac Leatherface (who is wearing a kneebrace in this installment of the series). Chaos, bloody murders, and a TCM-trademark "family dinner" ensue. About five minutes of footage had to be cut from this film in order to secure an R rating, and avoid the dreaded X rating (this film was released several months before the NC-17 rating, which was introduced in September, 1990. The uncut version is now available along with the R-rated version on DVD.
