THE STUDYSCAN SUITE
StudyScan is a computerised battery of tests
that has been developed, primarily to diagnose
dyslexia among students in higher education.
It will also provide a useful analysis of students’ strengths and weaknesses in a range of educational disciplines and areas of underlying ability.
The complete programme package is called 'The StudyScan Suite' and consists of two diagnostic assessment programmes 'QuickScan' and 'StudyScan' as well as a report and feedback generating programme called 'StatScan'.
QuickScan
QuickScan consists of a short computer administered self reporting questionnaire which identifies students' preferred learning modalities and whether they may be dyslexic.
The programme produces a short report which includes recommendations for optimising study styles and whether additional study skills support is needed.
QuickScan is available as a 'stand alone' computer administered questionnaire but also forms the first part of the StudyScan diagnostic assessment package.
If a student is recommended to sit the full battery of tests by QuickScan, the student will use the identity code which it issues as a 'log-in' for the StudyScan test.
The results from QuickScan are integrated by StatScan, the reporting and analysis programme, into the final report.
StudyScan
In the event of students being referred by QuickScan to its sister Programme StudyScan they then sit a full battery of cognitive and educational performance tests designed to qualify their dyslexia.
This has been designed for students in HE but it is also currently in use in a number of Colleges of Further Education and has even been highly successful with students at 'A' Level.
Although it has been designed to be capable of identifying dyslexia, even for non- dyslexic students it will provide information on their learning strengths and weaknesses and valuable feedback on areas where improvements could be achieved.
A number of hand written test items are completed by the student on a pro-forma answer sheet produced by the programme. This is assessed by the support tutor whose comments are fed into tutor input pages in StatScan.
StatScan
Is a programme designed to incorporate tutor input into the data collected and generate a final report. It will also provide immediate feedback on how the student has performed on individual elements of the test battery as they are completed.
The final report is designed to produce the maximum possible amount of information about the student's performance, and makes suggestions regarding areas where improvements could be made.
It is generated in two parts. Part One is the Dyslexia Report which goes into diagnostic detail with direct reference to Specific Learning Difficulties, and Part Two is the Analysis Report which contains a breakdown of the student's performance.
The final report can be printed selectively, taking only those pages considered relevant for the individual case, or can be reproduced in its entirety.

StudyScan was programmed and launched by Interactive Services Ltd. who are leading providers of education and training software in many fields.
This link will take you to their main webpage.
The StudyScan Suite was devised and produced by Pico Educational Systems Ltd in association with ISL.
The Pico Team worked together with ISL on piloting, programme development and research, and is continuing work on streamlining the programme for the future.
Pico Educational Systems Ltd now markets and supports The StudyScan Suite. Copies of the programme are now produced and supplied by Pico.
The new battery of tests in The StudyScan Suite
is modeled on traditional principles of educational
assessment. It has been developed from research
over more than five years by Dorota Zdzienski, a
specialist in the field of dyslexia.
In the UK, the tests were piloted by a group of students from Leicester. The University is committed to an equal learning opportunities policy for all students, and this link is to their special support unit which has provided invaluable assistance and feedback during production.
The programme was also piloted at Ulster university which has a similar commitment to student opportunity. This link is to the Ulster Student Support Unit whose efforts during the production phase are equally highly appreciated.

Development Help Needed
We are collecting data from StudyScan users all
over the country for the continuing process of
research and programme development.
If you can stand it we would be most grateful if
you could zip up all of your *.mdb files in your
StudyScan DB folder (the QuickScan and
StudyScan databases) and
e-mail them to us at:
StudyScan@zyworld.com.
Many thanks, the Pico Team
