German team take to

the Berlin streets!

The ShelterBox message has reached a huge new audience thanks

to a major publicity exercise staged by the charity's team in Germany.

Over a weekend in early May, the team set up camp in the heart of

the city - erecting four tents, plus large displays of boxes, equipment

and all kinds of information material.

As well as attracting the attention of shoppers, residents and

visitors, the tents were positioned only metres from the course of the

annual 'Run Berlin' event, which drew thousands of runners plus

large numbers of onlookers.

To further ensure that the ShelterBox presence was not overlooked,

the team also got their promotional message played on one of the

biggest video screens in the world. The 10-second 'teaser' was

repeated every minute for three days on the 104 square metre

screen!

The word on the streets: A major publicity exercise in Berlin saw

the ShelterBox name and message given a high profile outing.

CUNARD

PASSENGERS

SUPPORT

SHELTERBOX

More than US$27,000 has been

raised for ShelterBox by

passengers on the Cunard liners

Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen

Mary 2.

One of QE2's officers - who

lives in Cornwall - visited

ShelterBox HQ on an open day

last autumn.

She was so impressed with

the work going on that she put

the ShelterBox forward as one of

the charities to be supported on

QE2's Silver Jubilee World

Cruise.

Having been selected by QE2,

ShelterBox was then also picked

as one of the charities for the

inaugural world cruise of sister

ship QM2.

Members of both ships'

companies as well as

passengers took part in a whole

range of fundraising activities

during the recent world cruises.

Summer tour

begins!

ShelterBox is one of the two

charities being supported at this

year's Royal Cornwall Show -

one of the south west's biggest

annual events.

ShelterBox will have its own

stand at the show - which takes

place from June 7th to 9th - as

well as teams of volunteers

collecting money on the gates.

In addition to visiting

numerous other county shows

and public events over the

summer, the charity will also

have a stand at this year's

Glastonbury and WOMAD

festivals.

This will be the first time that

ShelterBox has had a presence

at either event and it is hoped

the two festivals will provide an

opportunity to make the charity's

work known to many more

potential supporters.

Details of events in support of

ShelterBox will in future be listed

on our revised website. Look

under the 'news' menu.

KEEP IN TOUCH!

Out Of The Box is produced each month so that we can keep in touch with our Rotary

supporters and update them on what ShelterBox is up to both in the UK and on

deployment around the world.

DISTRICT 1010
INTERNATIONAL SERVICE NEWSLETTER
JULY 2006

INTRODUCTION
I was delighted to meet quite a few of you at the District Assemblies in Aberdeen & Perth - I hope you found the day informative, especially those of you who are first time Club International Chairmen.  If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or email.

International Rescue Corps
The International Rescue Corps has been in the Opportunities to Service booklet for a number of years but I felt they had a low profile certainly within our district.  I therefore asked if they would like to speak at both the Perth & Aberdeen Assemblies.

The International Rescue Corps is an independent (i.e. non governmental funded) UN registered disaster rescue service, supported entirely by donations from the public.  It was formed in 1981, becoming operational in 1985, in the aftermath of the Italian Earthquake and since then it has undertaken many missions. IRC will attend any disaster whether natural or manmade.  The prime function of the IRC is as a First Phase rescue team - principally casualty, location and extrication.  It is the aim of the IRC to mobilise a self contained rescue team within 24 hrs (overseas), minutes (UK) of a request for help being received.  All members of the IRC are volunteers.

Willie McMartin gave a really interesting talk and showed a brief DVD of the work they do - very few of us realised that they deal with emergencies in the UK i.e. missing person searches, the gas explosion in Glasgow a few years ago.  Willie gave me a copy of the DVD he showed at the Assemblies - if any Club would like to borrow it, please let me know.

RIBI Preferred Projects for 2006/07
IMPACT was established by Rotarian Sir John Wilson in 1985 (he also founded Sightsavers).  He was himself blind and a leading campaigner for the prevention of disability.
IMPACT - their priorities are:-
To provide accessible surgery and early identification and treatment of disabling conditions
Ending hidden hunger caused by micronutrient malnutrition
Safer motherhood and child survival
Immunisation against disabling disease
Helping to break the link between disability and ageing.

IMPACT takes the hospital to the people.  Impact is at work in India where they have the Lifeline Express Hospital Train which is equipped with a modern operating theatre and where they undertake ear, eye, orthopaedic and plastic surgery.  In Banglasdesh, they have a floating hospital which takes specialist surgery and quality medical care to people living along the inland waterways.  Impact is also in E Africa, Nepal, the Philippines and other countries.

As well as much needed funds to prevent disability, they are also urgently requiring funds to renovate and re-equip the Lifeline Express Hospital Train.  The cost of renovating four carriages, replacing the air conditioning system and cost of equipment is estimated at £255,804.  If we break this figure down, it equates to about £8,800 per District - and just over £100 per Club.   I am sure most clubs could manage to find at least the £100.

WHEELCHAIR FOUNDATION UK
They aim to supply all disabled people in developing countries with wheelchair mobility with particular emphasis on Africa & Europe.  The wheelchairs provided by Wheelchair Foundation UK are purchased in bulk from manufacturers in China by their agent (Wheelchair Foundation USA) and designed to be the best possobie for use in developing countries.  Although they cost £100 each, each donation of £5o will be matched with funds provided by Wheelchair Foundation USA.  I believe very club has been sent the Wheelchair Foundation DVD - please show it to your club - it is so moving.

At the International session at both District Assemblies, it was agreed that we make this a District Initiative - if every club in the District could raise £150 to buy 3 wheelchairs, then we would have enough for a container load of 280 wheelchairs  from our District.  By doing this, we are then able to nominate a country and particular district where our wheelchairs can be sent.

I would very much appreciate some feedback from clubs as to whether they will be supporting this venture.  Cheques in due course should be sent to the District Treasurer, Doug Ritchie to enable us to purchase a container load of wheelchairs.

NYUMBANI VILLAGE PROJECT

In 2005 & 2006, Alison Stedman, Montrose Rotary Club visited the Nyumbani orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya which is home for children from the Kibera slums who are HIV/AIDS positive.  Alison now wants to build four houses in a Rotary compound for HIV/AIDS children and their carers.  This project is part of phase 3 of a village development at Nyumbani and has been really successful.  They are finding that with proper care, drugs, nutrition and lots of love, the children are thriving and keeping really healthy.

Each house will cost £7,000 making a total of £28,000 for the whole project but as Alison has already raised over £7,000, we still need to find about £21,000.  Divide that between the 85 clubs in our District plus Inner Wheel Clubs and it works out about £175 per club.  The project has already been ratified by the District Executive.  Alison will be addressing District Council in September when I hope this project will be ratified.
