The Versatile Smooth Collie The Smooth Collie is a versatile breed, able and happy to participate in a range of activities. Working disciplines are generally dominated by the highly work-orientated Border Collie, and to a less extent, by other fast, competitive breeds. The Smooth Collie is neither so obsessive, nor so fast, but is careful and clever, so for the owner who enjoys the companionship of the Smooth Collie, there are plenty of opportunities to train, and to participate with some success, in whatever area attracts. The Rough and Smooth Collie Training Association have an excellent website dedicated to all aspects of working collies.

General Information A useful starting point for this is the Kennel Club's GOOD CITIZENS SCHEME. Many Smooths positively enjoy the mental challenge of basic obedience training, and a good number of the breed have achieved the Bronze and Silver awards.

OBEDIENCE competitions provide further opportunities and are enjoyed by several Club members and their Smooths.
Joan Day and Sharidon Polly Flinders have been working 'B' and 'C' tests in obedience, and have represented Scotland in the Inter-regional Obedience Competition at Crufts, on several occasions.
Many Smooth Collies participate in AGILITY with great enthusiasm. Some just enjoy training sessions with their local clubs, while others go on to compete at matches and shows around the country. Regular training is required to build confidence and skill, while avoiding too much repetition.

Jean Tuck's Ch Dark Motif from Misstoff AW(G) has now reached grade 5 in agility, while Marie Douglas' Foxearth Speckled Wood AW has achieved grade 4.
The Kennel Club has recently adopted HEELWORK TO MUSIC. Tests are at three levels covering four aspects of the sport, and there are also regular competitions. Diane Purvey with Chicnoir Hors-La-Loi-III and Norfield Miss Magic Star has gained passes in Freestyle Level 1 Heelwork to Music.
Smooth Collies make good ASSISTANCE or PAT (Pets As Therapy) dogs. Moira Evans' Tentola Krugerand, and Jill Yeowell's Alopex Gordonstoun are qualified PAT-dog and regularly visit local hospitals.
Jennifer McKendrick and her Wesanya Smooths often visit schools to educate children about dogs.

Many Smooths who participate at 'working' events also take part in breed shows. Others, due to coat or conformation, or to the interests of their owners, participate only in working disciplines. For either group these activities offer a wonderful opportunity for Smooth Collie and owner to train and work as a partnership, and to utilise the inherent abilities of this working/pastoral breed.
Many thanks to Jean Tuck and Tony and Isobel Griffiths for contributing to this page. Any news of members' successes at working events is welcomed. Please send news and photos to the webmaster
