All through my childhood I would always be doodling on my school papers. Usually the doodles would be of animals or trees. I guess you could say I felt a connection to nature, and that would lead me to start drawing pet portraits. During these years of commissioned pet portraits I also started pet sitting and enjoyed my visits with all types of pets. I became familiar with many different breeds of dogs and cats which helped me to observe the details needed to capture the personality of the animal I was drawing. I entered some of my pencil and pastel animal portraits in a county fair in Michigan and won 2 first place ribbons, 1 second place ribbon, and 1 best of show. It also earned a place in the Michigan State Fair art competition. I was commissioned to create artwork for a couple of pet related companies, including a company logo. My interest in animal artwork didn't stop at drawing them. I loved writing about them, too. I won 3rd place for a dog writing contest, writing a comical poem about a dog hero. I also wrote a couple of articles for a web magazine about creating animal artwork. I am currently writing a dog related book. To date, I have pet portrait clients throughout the United States and Canada. I am quite busy with my pet sitting business, dog training, and writing, however, I will always find time to work on the pet portraits. That is my favorite creative outlet.
