ASHFORD CUP FINAL
Result of to-days final, Group (2) 6 points Group (5) 6 points
Group (2) win on shots scored 120 to 104.
To all who braved the elements this morning, my thanks.
The match was played on an excellent Wanstead Green and the result of the game went down to the last end on rink 3 with Group (5)
requiring a count of 3 shots to win. This was not achieved resulting with a victory to Group (2)
It was encouraging to see the keenness of the majority of the players participating.
To those doubters the ASHFORD CUP is still going strong and long may it continue.
My thanks to the Wanstead Club for them allowing the use of their facilities and green.
Pat Finney (Ashford Cup co-coordinator)

HEDLEY STEARNES SEMI-FINALS
By Alan Knight
In the semi-finals held at Wadham BC, Buckhurst Hill "A" (Mac Magudia, Roger Davis, Peter Tuff, Roger Pike) cruised into an early nine
shot lead against Silverthorn"A" (John Driscoll, Derek Mills, Gary North, Eddie Sluce) and remained untroubled throughout the game to
emerge as 27-14 winners.
Halex "B" (Keith Wade, Trevor Jarvis, Dave Holmes, Malcolm Andrews) versus Buckhurst Hill "B" (Ray Ascott, Bert Merralls, Ian Green,
Frank Dodsley) was  rather more tense as they matched each other 5-5 after the first six ends. Halex scored a four on the ninth end and
extended their lead to six shots after fifteen ends. However, Buckhurst Hill then sprang into life, scoring  eleven shots over the next four
ends only to be counter-punched with a four and a three to enable Halex to triumph 23-21.
The final between Halex "B" and Buckhurst Hill "A" will be held, as always, at Buckhurst Hill (where the late Hedley Stearnes was
President) on Friday 5 August starting at 5.30 pm. Anyone wishing to come along and watch will be most welcome.

HEDLEY STEARNES MEMORIAL TROPHY
By Alan Knight
The final was played at Buckhurst Hill B C on 5 August and featured a four from the home club (Mac Magudia Roger Davis Glenn Stephens
Roger Pike) against a rink from Halex (Keith Wade Trevor Jarvis David Holmes Malcolm Andrews).
With both leads in good form, early ends were equally exchanged and a five scored by Halex in the eighth end was swiftly countered by a
four by Buckhurst Hill in the tenth. After the fourteenth end, the score was 14-14 but then Buckhurst Hill scored five shots without reply
over the next three ends.
Defending a four shot margin into the final end, experienced Buckhurst Hill skip Roger Pike, who produced some telling woods throughout
the game, marshalled his rink effectively although his opposing skip, Malcolm Andrews' last wood jack trail almost brought about an extra
end. Buckhurst Hill "A" 21  Halex "B" 18.
The  players were presented with their trophies by Group 8 chairman, Jim Tebbutt, and Buckhurst Hill club captain, Ian Green and the
evening was rounded off by an excellent meal for the players and their guests provided by the Buckhurst Hill ladies including a superb
vegetarian curry from Mac Magudia's wife, Jay. Proceedings were hosted by Buckhurst Hill chairman, Malcolm Lord.
