RULES - COUNTY DOUBLE FOURS
From the Competition Secretary
I have been asked about the anomaly concerning the County Double Fours round dates, which indicate that the games should be played no later than:- and the day in question is a Sunday, whilst in the Competition Rules 1(h) it states that a Sunday cannot be offered as a date nor can the Saturday preceding a bank holiday The rule also indicates that these days can be used by mutual consent. I indicated last year that I considered it totally unacceptable to decline to accept a Saturday of a Middleton Cup date when neither club involved, had, or were likely to have, players involved in this competition, and this must remain the case this year. With regard to the County Double Fours, the inclusion of this rule re a Saturday and a Sunday was to overcome the fact that Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday are not Bank Holiday per se and it was important to recognise that many people go away for a few days during these periods. However there is nothing to prevent a game being played on either of these days, providing both clubs agree. It is more important that games be played than it is to adopt a pedantic attitude to the rules. The words 'By Mutual Consent' have been included to facilitate the game being played. Given that, with the advent of Unification, the Competition Rules will have to be examined before next year, a more clear definition concerning this and other rules will be in place for the 2012 season.
