WHAT TO DO IN ISLAY
1. SWIMMING: Islay has an abundance of large, beautiful and often deserted sandy beaches on the west coast such as Lossit, Kilchoman, Saligo, Ardnave, Gruinart, Kilinallan, and Sannaig Mhor, but it should be noted that swimming at these beaches can be dangerous and is not recommended due to the very strong undercurrents, created by the large Atlantic breakers. At low tide, large rock/sand pools are formed, particularly at Kilchoman and Saligo, and with a bit of care, it is possible to swim in these.
Loch Indaal presents a much safer swimming environment and for the feint at heart, there is always the Mactaggart indoor swimming pool. Bowmore, which is open daily.
2. PONY TREKKING: Is available at Rock Side trekking centre (telephone: 0149 6850 231) by prior arrangement.
3. BIRD WATCHING: A fair number of rare birds can usually be seen on Islay. In the winter months, 2/3rds of the world’s population of barnacle Geese nest here. There are bird hides located at Gruinart for keen bird watchers. If you are lucky, you may see a golden eagle between Kilchiaran and Lossit.
4. FISHING: Loch and river fishing can be arranged through the local estates. Sea fishing can be arranged through local fishermen, or fish from the rocks and pier immediately in front of the house.
5. HILL WALKING: There are some beautiful cross-country walks that can incorporate a visit to large, deserted sandy beaches.
6. DISTILLERY VISITS: Are encouraged by distilleries such as Bowmore that also have a very attractive visitors centre.
7. EATING OUT: The STB 4* Port Charlotte Hotel and Restaurant is located round the corner (50 yards). The Croft Kitchen is approximately 4 minutes walk.
8. LOCAL SHOPPING: There is a SPAR shop at the local Post Office, which is only a 3-minute walk. Bowmore, the capital of Islay, is 10 miles distant, and has a Co-Op supermarket and other attractive stores, including excellent butchers, and a bakers shop.
9. MUSEUM OF ISLAY LIFE: Located in Port Charlotte is well worth a visit.
10. GOLF: There is a championship 18-hole golf course at Machrie, which is a 25-minute drive from Port Charlotte. Non-members are welcome.
Should you not wish to participate in any of the above, just lie back, relax, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Islay.
