Chapter 2

Chapter 1

Basics

Can you speak another language other than English? If so, it would have taken time, studying, and learning before you were fully able to communicate. This is so with bidding in bridge. The more you play, the more you will learn and appreciate this language of bidding. This is a language that is based on logic and understanding. It is not sufficient to just learn the bids. You also need to understand why.

Find a favourite partner. This must be someone with whom it is easy to communicate. It will take a long time to build a good partnership. You will need to develop your system so that you both will know what is meant by each bid you make.

Get to know and trust each other. Remember never to criticise at the table. Find time after each session to discuss the hands you played. There will be disagreements, which will have to be resolved. It is important to finally reach agreement on even the smallest point. There can be no future in a partnership that cannot do this.

Every bid that is made should tell each other more about the hands in order to find the best contract.

Whatever system you decide to play, the following basic principles will apply. Keep to these principles in order to build up the trust you must have for each other.

Objective. You want your partner to be able to say that from your bidding, he knows what to expect from your hand. Your holding will not come as a surprise to him. The reverse is also true.

Focus. Leave all other thoughts other than bridge behind you once you sit down. First and foremost, when you are playing, forget about the last hand, good or bad. Concentrate on this hand. Take time to analyse the facts you have gathered in the auction so far before making a bid. Don’t be rushed. Take time to think.

Sound opening bids. Have at least 12 points.

Sound overcalls. Show a good suit. Not a suit as bad as J8xxx.

Best bid available. It is not always possible to find the perfect bid. Make the bid that is the best one available.

Pass. Learn how valuable this bid is.

Bid up the line. Show all 4 card suits up the line. I recommend keeping bidding open up to 1NT.

Be Disciplined. Try always to keep to the rules.

Evaluation of hands. Learn how to evaluate the hand after each bid.
