         REDOUBLES

In its simplest form:

  • Partner opens 1 of a suit, next hand doubles:
  • Redouble from you now says "Partner I have no more than 2 of your suit, and I do have at least 10 points. We may perhaps have the opps in the firing range for a good penalty, should your hand be suitable"
  • LHO 1 ..Partner1 ..RHO double (probably Negative Double)..Now a redouble from you announces 10 points plus, no more than 2 Spades, with the values in the other suits.
  • If you are confident that partner’s doubled bid can make; then DON’T redouble—just pass

USING REDOUBLE AS AN SOS

If partner is doubled after making an overcall, SOS now takes on the meaning of "HELP!!". BUT only after passing first

Let me show you a bidding sequence.

LHO 1 .....1 from partner....RHO pass.... You pass

LHO double (reopening)…partner pass......RHO pass!!! ..........you?

RHO has originally passed the 1 overcall because he HOPED partner would reopen with a double which he can now pass. This is converting his partner’s take out double into a penalty double.

From working out the logic of this sequence it is obvious that the spades are stacked.

You hold:-

void

xxxx

Axxxx

Kxxx

You redouble. This is saying to partner. "Help. I know the spades are stacked. Pick another suit."

The question is then how can you tell if redouble is showing 10 points plus, or is a SOS rescue bid?

If a redouble is used at the first opportunity after the initial double, then it is the strong hand.

If the hand passes after the double and then subsequently redoubles, then it is SOS
