OPENING 2NT Should you open 2NT with a singleton Honour? Should you open 2NT with a good 5_card Major?
To both these questions I say YES. It is far more important to show that you have between20 and 22 points than to be too rigid about the shape requirements for an opening 2NT bid. An example is:- ♠ AQJxx ♥ KQx ♦ Axxx ♣ A This is a hand that has game potential if partner has only 5 points. The risk of opening 1 ♠ is that partner will pass with that holding. Now if you agree that it is right to open 2NT with maybe a 5-card major, then what, if any, action should responder take? With any singleton or void, then responder should look for a major fit of 4/4 or 5/3. This of course is assuming there are enough points for game. An example would be a shape of 4/3/5/1. The singleton being in clubs.
If you are going to be flexible in opening 2NT then it is essential that you play Puppet Stayman.
A bid of 3 ♣ will find either a 5/3 fit or a 4/4 fit in the majors.
Responses from the 2NT opener are 3♥/♠.... 5 card suit 3♦ ...... 4 card major 3NT......No 3 or 4 card major
