MINOR SUIT OPENING BIDS
Whether you play SAYC, Two over One, or Acol the only differences in the system occur with the bids of 1NT over a major, and 2 of another suit over an opening bid.
I recommend that the opening bid of 1♦ should always show a four-card suit, therefore occasionally 1club could be opened with only a doubleton.
Responses are:-
A)
Bid any four-card suit up the line. Over 1 ♣ , if you have a 4-card diamond suit---bid it
B)
With an unbalanced hand ( containing a singleton or void), raise the minor ONLY if no other 4 card suit up the line. 1♣ ----2♣ This hand MUST contain at least 5- card support. There is no other distribution that will have a singleton or void and no other 4- card suit.
1♦ ---2♦ . This hand will have a minimum of 4-card support.
Responses are:-
1♣ / ♦ ----2♣ / ♦= 6 to 9 points
1♣ /♦ ----3♣ /♦= 10 to 12 points
If you are playing Inverted Minors the point count is reversed.
C)
With Balanced hand (no singleton or void) 6 to 10 points -------- 1NT
10 to 12 points------- 2NT
13 to 15 points--------3NT
Note that 10 point hands can be responded to with either 1NT or 2NT. The choice will depend on the intermediate cards. With a poor 10 points I recommend 1NT.
