             INTERFERENCE OVER 1NT

Basic rule is systems on after a double, and off after a suit is bid.

1NT….X………?

Assuming the double is penalty then:

  1. With balanced hand …..nothing to say with or without points…. PASS
  2. Use transfer bid of 2/ to get to heart or spade contract.
  3. 2 is Stayman.
  4. With 5-card club or diamond suit, redouble. This asks partner to bid 2, which you will either pass or convert to 2.

1NT…2///…?

Assuming you have points and wish to take some action then:

Your action will be dependent on whether the bid by the opps is genuine or is an artificial one.

Over genuine bid of ///:

Holding points use the negative double. That is you double showing shortage in the suit, or pass holding the suit. Partner will be able to tell from your pass if it is with the suit held or not. Using the principle of reopening, IF he holds 3 cards or more in the suit he will know that you are NOT lying in wait, and will also pass. However if your partner, the NT opener is short in the suit he will double. Now you should know whether to stand the double or not. With good holding you will pass, or with poor holding will take it out. This may sound complicated, but it is all very logical once you understand Negative Doubles.

Cue Bids of opps suit are Game Forcing

1NT…2__3

This shows both majors with Club guard. (Without Club guard would have doubled 2 to show the majors).

1NT__2__3

The same

1NT__2__3

Showing Spades and Heart guard.

1NT__2__3

Showing Hearts and Spade guard.

Over artificial bid of 2 Clubs or 2 Diamonds

Holding points, now you double with values in the suit bid. Hopefully you or your partner will be able to double the anchor suit. However if he passes the anchor bid, then it is up to you to take further action or not. You will know that partner has NOT got sufficient values in the anchor suit to double.

Holding points outside the suit bid, then wait for further bidding before taking action.

1NT__P__2__X

?

You open 1NT; your partner bids 2 (Stayman). The next hand doubles (showing a club suit). If you have a 4 card major you will bid it. Otherwise you have a choice of bids.

  • Pass--- This just denies a 4 card major. There is no need to bid 2 diamonds. You have nothing of any interest to tell your partner.

  • Redouble--- Denies 4 card major and shows club suit.

  • 2 Diamonds Not only does this deny a 4 card major BUT it also shows a diamond suit.

By doubling 2 clubs, your opponent has given you the opportunity of making 2 extra bids

1NT__P__2__X

?

Your partner has made a transfer for you to bid 2. This has been doubled to show a Heart suit

You now have choices

  1. Bid 2 Spades. Shows 3-card support
  2. Pass. Shows 2-card Spade support
  3. Redouble. Shows 2-card Spade support and good Hearts.
