              IMPS AND MPS

Playing IMPs, overtricks only count for a very small difference in the score, whereas in MPs it could mean a top or a bottom.

For example in a contract of 4 spades, the most important thing in IMPs is to make the contract, and to use safety plays to ensure this.

In MPS however, if you can make an overtrick and everyone else is only making the contract you will score 100% on the board.

Bidding is exactly the same with IMPs and MPs.

Go for the 50% games in IMPs, but dont look for small percentage games.

Exactly the same with slam bidding. You want to be in 50% slams in IMPs...maybe dependent on a finesse.

In both forms of scoring it is important, to look at the hands once the bidding has finished, and ask yourself these important questions.

  • Are other pairs likely to reach the same contract? If so, play for an average score, and don’t take chances in going for a top, and risking a bottom.
  • If most pairs wont be in this game, then make sure you make it! Think what could go wrong, and take precautions

The other thing I would mention is that in MPs, if there is a chance to play in NT then do so.
