     HELP SUIT GAME TRY

So far the bidding has gone:-

1 ….. 2 .

Your partner has shown 6 to 9 points OK?

If you have 18/19 points you bid game, that is easy

If you only have 12/13 points you pass, that is also easy

If you have a good 16 or any 17 point hand, you would invite game with a bid of 3

Those hands are clear cut.

However there are a lot of hands in the middle range that are much harder to judge as to whether to invite or not.

Suppose you have a side suit in which you need help. You have enough for game, but are worried about losers in one suit. For example a holding of 3 small, or 3 to the Jack? So use the help suit try bid. Bid 3 of this suit.

  • Partner with a singleton or an ace or a king in this suit will bid 4 even with min points.
  • With a doubleton, he will bid 3 of the major with min points, and 4 with a maximum. With 7/8 points decide whether to call hand minimum or maximum.
  • With 3 small, he will sign off with 3 of the major.

This is very effective in reaching game on slender values, and warns of the danger in bidding too far, with both hands holding 3 losers in a specific suit.

You hold:-

A J x x x

K x x

A K

Your partner’s hand is

K x x x

A x x

  x x

The bidding will go

1   ---2

3  (showing 3 losers in the suit)

Now your partner although only having minimum points for his bid will bid 4 .
