FOURTH SUIT FORCING Sometimes, after 3 bids have been made it is still unclear as to which is the best contract. You may have a 5-card major and would like to know if partner has 3-card support. Or you may need to know if partner has a stopper in the 4th suit before bidding 3NT. In order to elicit information from your partner use FOURTH SUIT FORCING When either opener or responder bids the fourth suit in an uncontested auction, the bid is artificial, shows 10+ points, and is forcing for one round at the 2 level, and to game at the 3 level. For example, 1♥ --1♠ 2♣ --2♦ 2♦ is artificial and forcing for one round. Opener's rebids, in order of priority, are: | 2 of responder's major (♠ ) : | 3-card support | | Rebid of opener’s suits : | 6-card suit | | Raise of the fourth suit : | Shows 4-card support. | | 2NT : | Natural, with a stopper in the fourth suit | 1♠ --2♦ 2♥ --3♣ Is artificial and is forcing to game. FSF does NOT apply in the following situations: A) 1♣ - 1♦ 1♥ - 1♠ While 1♠ is forcing, it shows a 4-card spade suit. To use Fourth Suit Forcing in this sequence only you make a bid of 2♠. B) When responder makes a jump bid of the fourth suit, it is natural showing invitational values and at least 5-5.
