               CHECKBACK

Having heard partner open, you then respond with your 5-card major. Partner now bids 1NT. You would like to find out if partner has 3-card support and also show if he has four cards in the unbid major. One way of doing this is by using CHECKBACK

Checkback is used by responder after opener has rebid 1NT. The bid of 2 is an artificial one, and asks opener to further describe his hand within the range of his 1NT rebid.

You open 1 partner says 1 and you rebid 1NT showing balanced hand 12 to 14 points.

Your Hand is:-

  Kxx

 ♥ AJXX

 ♦ KQXX

 ♣ JX

Your partner now bids 2 (Checkback)

The responses are as follows

2 Minimum hand (12 and bad 13) with 2 Spades and 3 Hearts

3 Maximum hand (good 13 and 14) with 2 Spades and 3 Hearts

2 Minimum hand with 4 Hearts and 2 Spades

3 Maximum hand with 4 Hearts and 2 Spades

2 Minimum hand with 3 Spades and 2 or 3 Hearts

3 Maximum hand with 3 Spades and 2 or 3 Hearts

2NT Minimum hand with 3 Spades and 4 Hearts

3NT Maximum hand with 3 Spades and 4 Hearts.

To use Checkback you must have a minimum of 11 points to be able to invite game.

On the example hand the bid over 2 is 3NT showing maximum points with 3 Spades and 4 Hearts.

If you are playing weak NT then the 1NT rebid would show 15 to 17,

now you will only need 8 points to use Checkback
