Gwen Churchill - a tribute 1929 - 29th June, 2009
We were all very sorry to hear of the sudden death of the club's former chairman, Gwen Churchill. Gwen had been a member of the Herts and Middlesex for many years, since she first started showing her Siamese cats, starting with her first blue-point stud Amberwitch Moody Blue. She was our cup secretary for as long as I can remember, taking great care of all the trophies, cleaning them beautifully for every show and presentation. She was an enthusiastic delegate to Council and vice chairman, and when the club almost disintegrated a few years ago, she took the office of chairman to guide the club and its new committee. Gwen was one of the nicest, kindest and most loyal people it has been my pleasure to meet in over 25 years in the cat fancy. Her devotion to her cats is summed up very accurately in this letter from her daughter, Carol "Mum has always loved animals and my memories of our first cat before the Siamese took over our household was a very large Tortoiseshell called Bambi. The first Siamese's were 2 chocolate point brothers Simba and Rama we could not tell them apart so Mum made them small eleastic collars with their names on. I was only about eight so they had to put up with being dressed in baby clothes and pushed around in a dolls pram. We had a few moggy strays that joined the family during this time Mum even brought back a black and white kitten with us from a camping holiday in Derbyshire as the farm wasn't looking after it properly, A while laterafter I had left home the first Siamese that set Mum and Dad on the Cat shoes and breeding was Amberwitch Moody Blue (Blue) her first stud cat which according to my brother was really his? I don't know who or where she brought him from. She has lots of fun over the years showing and breeding with many cats that I can't remember all their names. They even travelled to Scotland to go to a show one year and stayed with my Aunt. Her love and life towards the end was her cats. My Dad always said they were fed and looked after better than us. But I bet you have heard that before." The World, and this club in particular, will be a lesser place without her.
