RUGBY ,
THE family of the late Aberdonian international Bert
Bruce have donated treasured pieces of his playing
memorabilia to Scottish Rugby to be displayed at
Murrayfield.
As the first Gordonian to represent Scotland, Bruce had a
distinguished club career which included captaining the
Aberdeen side.
He was capped against Australia in 1947 and then Wales,
France and Ireland the following year.
His Scotland cap, national jersey and shirt he received in
exchange after his Test against the French have all been
donated.
His daughter, Marilyn Paterson, said: "He didn't talk
a great deal about his international achievements. He
was a very modest man hence the reason these items
were found in a box."
Bruce founded Stornoway Rugby Club while living there
in 1952.
He was secretary of the North District and a
selector for many years and was Gordonians president
from 1974 to 76. He died in 2001, aged 78.
