Teignmouth Community Choir Sings...

SELFISH GENE

I'm a selfish gene and I'm programmed to survive
I shape my living organisms so I stay alive
It isn't me exactly, I'm nothing but a code
For which my hosts and I are just a temporary abode

Selfish gene - a software routine
Selfish gene - I am what I mean
Selifsh gene - I strive to survive
Selfish gene - forever alive

[Recording starts a little before here]

I'm a spiral chain of acids, nucleic to be exact
Adenine and guanine are purines - that's a fact
Cytosine and thymine are pyrimidines, it's true
Together they make DNA - now that's a whole lot to chew

Selfish gene - a software routine
Selfish gene - I am what I mean
Selifsh gene - I strive to survive
Selfish gene - forever alive

I'm a selfish gene and I pass along my trait
Dominant or recessive, I recess or dominate
With every generation I hope to replicate
But every million times or so I accidentally mutate

Selfish gene - a software routine
Selfish gene - I am what I mean
Selifsh gene - I strive to survive
Selfish gene - forever alive

Selfish Gene was written by members of the Community Choir in two songwriting workshops with David Haines, who then arranged it for 3-part harmony.  This recording is from a performance on 3rd February 2005 at the Langstone Cliff Hotel, Dawlish Warren.
