The idea of teleworking has been around since telecommunications have enabled distance working. Now however, more than ever, there is a clear need for local work centres that are not sweat shops (as in many call centres), and not distant work places (as many business are), but locally based office space that accommodates flexible business working. The Telework Assocation has a handbook (that you also can order from the link above) explaining all of this, as well as a regular magazine and a network of centres across the UK, and is linked to a growing worldwide network of associations. Because of abuses by some companies, the law needs to be changed to reflect new practises, and that is another aspect of the association's work. Meeting Point, which runs this web site, is a local group for the association. See our computer club page for more information about where and when we meet.
Local centres usually provide DTP, fax, photocopying, rented PCs, sometimes (and not reported often enough) internet access, and other business and organisation support. Some provide creches, others training and so on. Follow the link below to a association map to find your nearest centre, or contact John on 0117 9401782 to see how you could help move us forward to set up our own centre in East Bristol!
Telework is the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as tools for remote or distant working.
THE best means to reduce pollution through telecommuting rather than real commuting!
NOT necesarily HOME based, could and should often be LOCAL TELECENTRE based working.
Flexible Working practices are highly relevant, and laws need changing...
