FLAG began life in early 1998 as HAG (Hillfields Action Group). It was begun as a result of concerns from residents on the Hillfields Park estate about what was considered to be a decline in the quality of life on the estate. Concerns had grown over a number of years about issues such as an increase in criminal activity, more drug use, anti-social activity and increased incidents of neighbourhood disputes.
Local people wanted to come together to work-up projects designed to reduce the problems on the estate. With the help of some start-up funding from Bristol City Council, the group began its work in the summer of 1998.
The name was changed to FLAG as a result of the members' desire to include other parts of the area that were undergoing similar issues as Hillfields. As a result, FLAG has now developed good working partnerships with local schools, the police, Youth Service and other voluntary groups.
To date FLAG has held public meetings, produced newsletter, undertaken a residents servey and is managing a range of projects (see below). The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss progress and future.
