Labour's Vision for Thurmaston

All new housing should be on brown field sites. We reject County Hall's proposals to build 5000 houses on the green fields between Thurmaston & Barkby. The Tory's detailed plans to build on agricultural land all over the County,  instead of derelict industrial sites can be downloaded here.

Work with Leicester City Council to solve the transport and traffic issues that beset Thurmaston. Lobby now for the proposed Leicester Tram to come via Birstall to Thurmaston and terminate at Syston. Make two lanes of the A607 for buses only, to reduce speed, noise and pollution.

Invest in bringing the High Street back to life as a thriving shopping centre.

Locate new & modern employment estates north of Thurmaston between Asda and the Hobby Horse, to provide opportunities for new jobs, entrepreneurs and businesses offering skilled and well paid jobs. We do not need more warehousing.

We oppose County Hall's plans for a waste incinerator for domestic rubbish, instead we should use more modern, cleaner and greener alternatives such as autoclave and anaerobic digestion. Nottinghamshire's rubbish must not pass through Thurmaston (A46/A6) to feed the incinerator. You can download the County's waste plans here, which states that waste handling sites can be located in SUEs, such as the one they plan to build on agricultural land at Thurmaston. (see policy WCS3 on page 27, and pre-amble "In particular opportunities to locate waste facilities within the sustainable urban extensions will be sought.").

Support the National Care Service for older people
Stop the County abandoning older people, keep our care homes open and offer more services to enable people to continue living independently in their own homes. Labour will introduce the National Care Service after the next general election to provide free home care for the most needy.

Make Thurmaston a priority for planning, not an afterthought!
