Greetings from Boise, Idaho, U.S.A. Home base for C. Iris On Pond (CIOP). Iris & daylilies are the speciality of the garden at CIOP.
This site is mostly informational & not intended to serve as a catalog. All photos and production work on this site are product of Ken & Carol Coleman, owners of C. Iris On Pond. Photos are of plants grown at C. Iris On Pond & other gardens through out the American Northwest. Use the many links provided above to locate horticultural, organizational & retail information. We of course will be glad to provide assistance in locating a retail source for just about anything you see on our site. As an American Iris Society Display Garden, assisting the public is our main priority. Assistance in locating sources for hard to find A. I. S. registered & introduced iris cultivars is also provided via email requests. Enjoy your visit to C. Iris On Pond
Southwestern Idaho growing conditions promote healthy disease free plants. Our elevation is 2,790 ft. Latitude is 43 deg. 35 min. north. Idaho soils vary from sandy, both granitic and lava, to clay. Radical changes in soil conditions over very short distances are just a fact of life in the Gem State. Good top soil is only found on flood plain areas. CIOP's soil is heavy clay with a ph of 6.5 to 7.5. Boise & the surounding Treasure Valley is rain challenged with only 12 inches per year. Sunshine is abundant. Our survival depends on extensive reservior systems holding water from winter snow pack in the nearby mountains. Flood irrigation & deep wells are the norm. Temperatures vary from a high of +111 deg. f. to a low of -26 deg. f. During the last decade winter temperatures in the minus catagory have been rare. Sage brush, juniper, prickly pear cactus and Iris Missouriensis are common native flora on the valley floor and surrounding foothills. Timbered areas naturally occur only where winter snows accumulate or along waterways. We are on city water and use an extensive soaker/drip system. NO ON SITE RETAIL PLANT SALES FROM THE GARDENS. OUR A.I.S. registered iris introductions are currently available by mail order direct from C.I.O.P. and through Bountiful Bulbs (see link above). C. Iris On Pond is a Idaho State licensed nursery dedicated to Research, Development (hybridizing) & Education. Training sessions for A.I.S. Garden judges are regularly held at CIOP. As a display garden for Median, Louisiana & Siberian irises the public is also welcome. Call ahead for directions (208 336 3052) or email us.
