BRAKES

Probably the first page you looked up and for good reason.

This is the only place you will find fully designed and developed brake systems that actually work.

We spent a considerable amount of money and three years getting this right so you can be confident in your ability to stop. Something that simply is not there with the original brakes or most of the other so called 'up-grades' If other people who sell Capri brake systems had done this much research, they would know what we know and they obviously don't!

We believe in the 'keep it simple' approach so we use as many common OE parts as possible. No special callipers that need special pads.

You can find brake pads for our systems at your local motor shop on a Sunday morning. We don't recommend using 'jims' pads but at least you can if you're stuck.

Using common OE callipers also means the price is right too. If you don't mind a bit of breakers yard action, you can put together the most powerful brakes for a couple of hundred quid.

All you need are the trick bits from us and the benefit of our experience.  We can promise that brake fade will be a distant memory.

If you are looking at this as a result of a magazine article, please read it carefully to avoid confusion. Articles are often written without our knowledge and contain many misleading and inaccurate statements.

Our front and rear systems work together because we designed and tested them. Like everything - follow the instructions and the results are good. Cut corners and you are on your own.

If you have an ESCORT - CORTINA or a KIT CAR  please talk to us before you spend any money. There are wheel size restrictions and minor differences but we can save you a lot of time and money   We also have extensive experience with SIERRA hub, disc and calliper combinations.

Check out the BARGAINS PAGE from time to time we have used brake kits and calipers where people have up-graded.

WE ARE AWARE THAT COPIES OF OUR BRAKE SYSTEMS ARE AVAILABLE FROM DUBIOUS SOURCES.

WE ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY PROBLEMS ARISING FROM FRAUDULENT USE OF OUR DESIGNS

We chose original fit Brembo calipers because they are now so easy to find.
From an engineering point of view, they are in a different league.
Both the calipers we use are un-equal piston directional.
Service parts and pads are readily available.

If you allready have the Gtr system fitted, your hubs will be fine
and the fitting kit will vary slightly to suit the hole sizes in your struts.

MINIMUM WHEEL REQUIREMENT 7 x 15

GTR 260 Granada system
features a specially sourced 260 mm disc which allows fitment in 7"x13" wheels
(Kits now available to suit the series 2 RS turbo disc)
only Granada, XR4i, XR4x4 and series 2 RS turbo calliper will fit. Mondeo is too big.
complete kit less than £300 - budget kits from £150
Bracket kits, hub mods and hoses all available seperately.

MINIMUM WHEEL REQUIREMENT 7 X 13 or 6 x 14
There are a number of fundamental design errors in the original Ford system fitted to not only Capri's but Escort and Cortina.
The GTR system is the only one on the market that addresses all of them.
As you can see, the idea is very simple and instalation is not a complex precedure.

If you have the budget for larger wheels, do it. Not only do you have the option for better brakes,
you have 5 times as many tyre options to choose from.

If you have to stay with 13" wheels, don't worry - our 13" 260 system will out brake a Cosworth so your'e in safe hands.

GTR 280Granada System
originally designed as an easy up-grade from 260 but very
handy if you have all 4 Granada callipers and larger wheels
Mondeo callipers use larger pads and larger fixing bolts.
That's the only difference other than they now seem easier to get hold of.
GTR 280 up-grade kit
if you already have the 260 system and you now have larger wheels
this is what you need
prices from £160
Here are a few rules that should be followed to stay safe when you are working with brakes

Only fit rear discs when the front system is adequate to keep a correct balance
This means no stock M16 callipers or Princess 4 pots - both totaly inadequate

Use front and rear callipers which have the correct piston sizes to work together.
Using the Ford Sierra / Granada calliper on the rear means the front callipers should have 60mm diameter pistons
or the 2 pistons in a 4 pot should add up to the same area.
Most of the cheap alloy 4 pots have pistons that are too small.

You must fit rear discs with the front 280 systems
if you don't - the front is doing all the work and will lock up in the wet.

Never use front callipers on the rear
the rear brakes contribute less than 20% of the braking effort
this means a front system is about 5 times stronger than the rear.
Put a front calliper on the rear & you know exactly what's going to happen!!!

on the Left - Cosworth 283mm    on the Right - stock 2.8i  245mm
in the centre, and this is the funny bit, our new REAR vented disc at 250mm
The GTR 280 system is so powerful, we can use a vented rear disc larger than
most people run on the front!
Rear Vented discs and brackets from £110 you can do the rest your self

Brake pad design is also important.
The rear pad in the centre is as effective as the original M16 on the right.
it is smaller in one direction but larger where it matters, round the outside
diameter of the disc,  where the leverage is greatest.
Another common sense reason to use modern well designed components.

Although they look almost the same, there are 3 different sizes.
Left - Cosworth 273mm solid or vented disc - too big for GTR - Brembo use only
Centre - 4x4 253mm solid or vented disc - a perfect fit - 14" wheels min.
Right - Peurgeot 405 249mm solid disc - 13" wheels (half shaft machining reqd)
Laser cut for a perfect fit every time - blasted and painted - under £50 a pair

Escort Timken / English axle brackets now available
13" wheel 249 Peugeot disc and 14"+ wheel 253 4x4 solid disc or special vented disc

Cortina now also available 14"+ wheel 253 4x4 solid or special vented.
When you are working with different brake callipers, you need to know about piston sizes.
We use a set formula which works better than any other.- Pretty simple really.
"use previous research which you know to be sound"
take a look at the Sierra or Granada - do the brakes work? - oh yes.
Ford obviously got the piston sizes perfectly matched so why re-invent the wheel?

Planning some track day action?
you'll be needing one of these.
Design your rear system to produce enough power for wet conditions
at almost full pressure. You can then wind it down for dry use.
If you are using a rear disc system on the road
use one of these - stolen from an F reg on Sierra
once adjusted, it will stop the rear brakes locking in a panic situation.
run rear discs without it and you will experience a little sideways action
at the worst moment possible (just before impact)
As you can see from the picture below, we can make stainless braided hoses to suit the bias valves.
For track use, we favour the in car route, so we make hoses to do this too.
We also make a complete engine bay only hose kit.

Larger brake calipers  means you'll need a larger master cylinder.
Our larger master cylinders are only for use with our system.
They will not solve problems with any other calliper combinations
unless the piston sizes are the same.
This is the servo you need to fit the larger cylinders. It's from a 2 litre Capri
Laser - GL etc but nothing else. It's the same size as a 2.8 / 3 litre but the studs are M10
and you can not see into the unit around the spindle. Do not get stuck with a 1.6 unit, it is
not large enough to do the job. These are recognised by the vacuum fitting being at
12 'O' clock rather than 2 'O' clock. Pedal and bulk head fittings are the same.

The larger master cylinders are the subject of much debate an the various forums.
It is true that they are from Land Rover's but there are many different sizes including some
which are exactly the same as the one you want to replace.
Both of the cylinders we use are over 25mm bore.
Make sure you get the right one!
Don't pay more than £100

You can see the obvious changes from the picture.
The disc is now on the outside of the hub where it can loose
the generated heat into the wheel.

Although this looks massive, it's the 260 system.
In this picture you can see how much thicker the disc is.

You can also see the hose lay-out and the position of the bleed nipple.
It is very easy to fit the calliper body up-side-down. Sounds stupid but people do it.
Moving the disc to the outside face of the hub is the most important change.
Once you have done this, the choice of calliper is not very important so don't get conned into
fancy alloy 4 pots with fancy price tags and pads that cost more than £50
in the real world, they are no better than a pair you could rob of a scrap car for £20

People who don't know any better will point out the weight advantages of alloy callipers.
Generally this happens when they have managed to blag a pair of callipers on the back of a magazine feature.

The fact is - alloy callipers with pads weigh about 3 kg's each and cost over £400 a pair
Mondeo callipers with pads weigh about 4 kg's and cost under £200 a pair new or £50 used.
I make that £200 + to save 2 kg's. Your choice?
Of course, in the real world, you can't blag free stuff so the price is important.
Think about the price of pads too. Do you want to pay £50 plus or less than £20?

Remember - all the pads you see here are EBC Kevlar, we supply nothing else because
there isn't anything better for the money.

Modifying the hubs is not a complex job.
You can see the obvious changes from the picture.
The wheel flange diameter is reduced to fit the disc and
the existing disc mounts are removed.
We also extend the wheel location step. If you don't
you may get some wobble problems.
This is the something we see all too often. Removing the disc from the hub
does require force but there is no excuse for this kind of damage.
Do not hit the ring round the seal directly, even with a copper hammer.
Protect it with a piece of wood or steel. You can also wind the bolts out a few turns
and hit them with a punch.
Never remove the bearing races with a punch. You will damage the seats in the hub.
The bearing races should be pressed out with appropriate tools.
We will fit new bearings as part of the modification work if required.

If you are sending hubs to be modified, please speak to us first
We require the bearing outer races in place so do not remove the bearings.
We also like them cleaned a little rather than straight off the car.
Hubs with damage as above will go in the skip.

new picture soon

You can see the obvious parts but remember that the half shaft
flange diameter is reduced to fit the disc on the 13" wheel (peugeot disc)
4x4 and Cosworth disc are a straight fit.

We modify the hand brake cable to suit the Capri and we think the
same would apply to Escort.  For use on Cortina and Kit Cars, a 4x4 Sierra
cable may well do the job without any changes.

A complete set with all new parts is about £400.
With used calipers and a bit of luck, closer to £200
You can see how neat it goes together.
Using the Sierra / Granada rear caliper is by far the best way.
Don't even think about Escort or Fiesta discs & calipers.
Remember - the front must be improved to keep the balance safe
especially on an Escort where the rear is not so heavy.
