Cold

D eath through cold injury ranks third on our list of primary causes with around 40 fatalities each year. In practice, cold is also the ultimate killer in most navigation tragedies and a fair proportion of avalanche and crevasse disasters. Statistics from the Canadian Alpine Club suggest that cold injuries were the main or contributory causes in as many as a third of winter mountain fatalities. Staying warm matters!
