The sixth of eight children born in Davilla, Texas to Robert Marion White and Minnie (Hunt) White, Tommy spent his childhood in rural Central Texas and attended Bartlett schools. He left high school to join the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he helped construct campgrounds and buildings we still visit today. Shortly after his committment to the CCC ended at the height of World War II, he enlisted in the Army and was proud to have fought for his country over two years against a real enemy. He earned 5 Bronze Stars and a Silver Star for his action in six major European campaigns. Upon his return, Tommy played professional baseball for a number of teams in the Texas and Evangeline Leagues, including a long stint as the ace pitcher for the Austin Pioneers. An injury sidelined his baseball career. He worked for Falstaff Brewery, Sheffield Steel and Halliburton in Houston. Tommy found his career in the labs of Ethyl Oil in Houston, joining and later becoming president of Local 4367 of the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union. He attended law school at the University of Houston, concentrating on labor law. It was also in this period he became involved in politics. Tommy was a Yellow Dog Democrat and was precinct chair several times. He believed for the rest of his life that the Democratic Party fights the good fight for those who are too often marginalized, gives voice to those who will otherwise be unheard, and refuses to bow to the greedy and power hungry element that will otherwise exert its influence over the American people. In 1956, Tommy married Joyce Jackson, a Bartlett girl, and they settled in Houston where she taught school. In 1964, they adopted their son, John, and two years later, daughter Becky. Health issues forced Tommy to take an early retirement, and the family resettled in Granger.
