Bad Dogs' reign of destruction continues

By ANDY FLORA - Special to The News-Post

The Bad Dogs continued their campaign of domination as American Championship Wrestling (ACW) returned to Rocky Mount for a special card Saturday night at Franklin County High School's Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

The night of wrestling was dedicated to the late professional wrestling legend Sandy Scott who recently passed away from pancreatic cancer.

To honor Scott, the ACW matmen joined many friends and former competitors of Scott's in a ceremony before the in-ring action began. During the ceremony 1970s and '80s broadcaster Rich Landrum recalled stories about Scott's life and his run through the wrestling territories.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Famer Jimmy (Boogie Woogie Man) Valiant and Mid-Atlantic Wrestling legends Ric McCord, and Don and Rocky Kernodle credited Scott with helping shape professional wrestling in this area. 'The tribute concluded with a special video put together by ACW photographer Tom Brewer.

Scott would have been proud of the action Saturday night, but not of the tactics of the Bad Dogs -- ACW heavyweight champion Col. Spud Wade, television titleholder Pvt. Robbie Lynn and Sgt Flo.

In the main event, Wade faced off against Sgt. Jim Nelson who was returning to competition after recovering from an attack from Ken Steel in November. Nelson had Wade in his famous finisher -- the cobra clutch -- and was certain to become the new heavyweight champion, but a desperate Wade intentionally made contact with referee Ric Petty causing Petty to land outside of the ring. Seeing his leader in trouble, Lynn jumped into the ring and was immediately met with a cobra clutch. Finally, Flo entered the ring and he was also met with a cobra clutch. Petty finally made it back to his feet calling for the bell and awarding Nelson the victory due to the fact Wade had made contact with him resulting in a disqualification. Wade is still the champion because a championship can't change hands on a disqualification. "Since you (Wade) keep dodging me and your flunkies seem to keep getting involved in our matches, I am going through them to get to you. And I am going to start with you," Nelson said as he pointed to Flo. Flo responded, "This match will not happen. I'm the only Sgt. here in ACW and I do not need to prove it to anyone."

"The Bad Dogs continued to show their teamwork in another championship match when Lynn faced Hillbilly Helbert who was trying to recapture the television title. The match went back and forth, but Helbert finally caught Lynn with his sidewalk slam finisher. Flo entered the ring to try to catch Helbert off guard, but Helbert met him and immediately threw Flo over the top rope. Referee Petty went over to remind Flo he must stay out of the ring during the match. While the referee was distracted, Wade entered the other side of the ring and hit Helbert with his megaphone, allowing Lynn to pin Helbert and get the win. "That is the second time you have cost me the belt Wade. So why don't you put your belt on the line next month at the armory," Helbert said. "I came here to beat up some Franklin County hillbillies tonight, but I can wait to next month. You are on," Wade retorted.

"In the third championship match, The Ebony Express defended their tag-team belts against Eclipso and new partner Scott Weddle. Eclipso thought he would have the upper hand in this bout when he took out Big Yella last month at the armory. However, Yella had a surprise for him when he allowed "Golden Boy" Tony Wright to take his place and partner with his brother, Mr. Jamie Wright. The Wright brothers were holding their own against the more experienced Eclipso and Weddle when finally Eclipso came off the top rope with his trademark softball bat while Weddle was distracting the referee. Eclipso went for the pin and secured the victory. While celebrating, Foxy Roxy came out from the locker room and informed the referee that Eclipso had used the bat. Referee Petty then restarted the match. The Wright brothers caught their opponents off guard and rolled them both up for a double pin to retain the titles. Eclipso and Weddle were furious with Foxy Roxy's convincing the referee to restart the match and took out their frustration on Roxy by delivering a 3D and Doomsday off the top rope. The Wrights finally recovered to save Roxy, but not before Roxy suffered a serious throat injury. It is believed that Roxy will be out of action for months.

"In a six-man tag-team match, the trio of Flo, Scott Lee, and Ken Steel defeated Roxy, Ace England, and The Sarge when Flo hit Sarge with Lee's num chucks while referee Petty was distracted by Steel.

In other bouts:

"Doink the Clown defeated Eddie Loco with a "Whoopee Cushion" splash on Loco.

"Damian James defeated D-Mack with a corner splash.

"Shawn Cruz defeated Firebird Charlie West with a lariat.

Wade captures ACW heavyweight crown

By ANDY FLORA - Special to The News-Post

A new heavyweight champion was crowned, but not without controversy Saturday night as American Championship Wrestling (ACW) returned to the Rocky Mount National Guard Armory.

Col. Spud Wade, accompanied to the ring with the other Bad Dogs (Pvt. Robbie Lynn and Sgt. Flo), defeated reigning champion The Legendary Eclipso, who was without his usual manager Douglas J. Wentworth III Esq. Instead, Eclipso was escorted to the ring by no other than arch enemy Sgt. Jim Nelson which surprised many at ringside. "Since I knew it was going to be three on one, I convinced Nelson to watch my back, but it cost me a championship match next month with Nelson -- a price well worth it,' Eclipso said. This no disqualification match included outside interference from the Bad Dogs, who Eclipso countered with the use of his famous softball bat and protection from Nelson. Eclipso seemed to have the victory in hand when he applied a sleeper hold on Wade in the center of the ring. Seeing his leader in trouble, Sgt. Flo started to enter the ring with a chair to break up the hold. But, before he could use the chair, Mr. Jamie Wright entered the ring from the locker room and stopped the advancement. While referee Ric Petty was dealing with Wright and Flo, Pvt. Lynn entered the other side of the ring and delivered a chair shot of his own on Eclipso. Wade then delivered his finishing move, the Spud Cutter, on a dazed Eclipso for the victory. Eclipso finally recovered to his feet to see Mr. Wright still holding the chair he took from Flo. "Why did you hit me with the chair Wright? I thought you said you had my back," Eclipso shouted. "I didn't hit you -- it was Lynn. He is the one who cost you the match," Wright retorted. Meanwhile, outside of the ring, Wade had an announcement of his own. "I'm through with you Eclipso. There will not be a rematch. You will never get a shot at the belt," Spud said. Eclipso quickly corrected Wade by reminding him of the title shot promised to Nelson. "You will defend that belt against Nelson on April 10 at Franklin County High School. The contract is already signed," Eclipso told Nelson.

Eclipso further stirred things up during the main event when The Ebony Express, comprised of Mr. Wright and Big Yella, defended the ACW tag team belts against Ken Steel and Scott Lee. Lee and Steel dominated the match but still could not pin the champions to grab the belts. A frustrated Lee finally grabbed his num chucks and struck Yella resulting in a disqualification. Meanwhile, Eclipso came to the ring to join the onslaught on Yella striking him with his softball bat repeatedly resulting in a serious back injury. Wright tried to help his partner but was overpowered by Eclipso. Finally "American Made" Scott Weddle came from the locker room to give Wright a helping hand, but to everyone's surprise joined Eclipso and delivered a double power bomb and"3D" on a defenseless Wright. "I came out earlier tonight and you fans actually booed me. Well if you are going to do that, I might as well do something to deserve it. I am sick and tired of not getting what I deserve here in ACW,' Weddle said."I am joining a true champion (Eclipso) and we are going to destroy the Ebony Express once and for all," Weddle said.

In other matches:

"Drake Tungsten and Shawn Cruz defeated Weddle and Foxy Roxy in a match that delivered many high flying moves. Tungsten finally caught Roxy in a fisherman suplex to secure the victory.

"Hillbilly Helbert defeated Sgt. Flo in a one on one match-up. Sgt. Flo dominated the match as usual when all of sudden Helbert caught him off guard and delivered a sidewalk slam for the pin. "Everyone saw him cheat, but that stupid referee. Petty even put his hands on The Flo and nobody does that. I have filed an official complaint to ACW commissioner to get him suspended for 30 days for his actions," Sgt. Flo said after the match.

Ace England saw his six-month reign as television champion come to an end as Pvt. Robbie Lynn pinned him to capture the championship. Lynn who was accompanied to ringside by Wade used the middle ropes during the pin to gain leverage.

"Eddie Loco continued to use his loaded boot to capture a win over Damian James.

ACW, sponsored by We Care of Franklin County, returns to Rocky Mount for a special event April 10 at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium for a night to remember wrestling legend Sandy Scott, who recently passed away from cancer.

This benefit show will feature special guests and great wrestling action. Tickets are $5, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Wright gets his revenge on The Flo

By ANDY FLORA - Special to The News-Post

Jamie Wright finally got the revenge he was seeking when American Championship Wrestling (ACW) returned to the Rocky Mount National Guard Armory for the We Care Christmas spectacular Saturday night.

In the main event, the team of Wright, The Legendary Eclipso, and Scott Weddle defeated Col. Spud Wade, Pvt. Robbie Lynn and The Flo in a Texas Street Fight. It was apparent early on that Wright and his teammates really were not concerned with the match, but to deliver punishment on their opponents, especially The Flo. In a Texas Street Fight, there are no rules and no disqualifications. Wrestlers are allowed to bring any foreign objects to the ring to use on their opponents. The match started with Wright charging at The Flo pounding him with fists of fury. Wade and Lynn proceeded to attack Eclipso and Weddle and finally referee Ric Petty cleared the ring and regained order. The Bad Dogs gained an early advantage by using an army belt to whip and choke Wright. Eclipso came to the aid of his former enemy He ripped the shirt from Wade's chest and proceeded to employ a leather strap to his hide. The action continued with The Flo avoiding Wright at all costs. However, Weddle extracted some revenge for Wright getting The Flo in the ring, ripping his shirt off, and delivering a series of chops that left red hand prints on his chest. Weddle followed that up with a leather strap across The Flo's back. Wade finally came to The Flo's rescue, but was met with an onslaught by Eclipso. Eclipso ripped Wade's shirt and placed it around his head, temporarily blinding him from the punishment the heavyweight champion was delivering. Wade even accidentally stuck his own partner Lynn with an elbow in the corner. Flo continued to avoid Wright causing Wright on many occasions to chase The Flo and deliver punishing strikes with the leather strap. The Flo even had to retreat under the ring to escape the blows delivered by Wright. At the end of the match, Eclipso and Weddle used handcuffs to keep Wade and Lynn outside of the ring, finally giving Wright the one on one matchup with The Flo he had been wanting. Wright backed The Flo back in the corner delivering punches and stomps to all parts of The The Flo's body. After five minutes of continuous punishment, Wright started to setup his finishing move, The Wright Stuff, a super kick to the face. The Flo noticed Wright's intentions and quickly motioned to referee Petty to come over.

"I can't take anymore. I'm done. I quit. No more," Flo said over the house microphone. A stunned referee called for the bell and declared Wright's team the victors. The Flo climbed the ropes and celebrated the fact that he avoided Wright's super kick by quitting. "I told you I had a plan. I have outsmarted Wright once again," The Flo told fans at ringside. The Flo dismounted the corner and continued to celebrate. A determined Wright was still ready to deliver The Wright Stuff and as The Flo turned to face him, he connected and delivered a knock-out kick to The Flo's jaw. The Flo lay motionless in the ring and Wade offered no assistance to him. "You quit on us Flo and now we are going to quit on you," Wade said. The Flo needed assistance back to the locker room by referee Petty. "The Flo got what he deserved. He is a quitter and now even the Bad Dogs won't help him. He might as well quit wrestling and go back to announcing,' Wright said. "One thing is for sure -- if we ever meet again, he has another Wright Stuff coming his way," Wright said.

In other action:

"Hillbilly Helbert defeated Eddie Loco in a tapped fist match. Loco had delivered another kick with his loaded boot and Helbert had to use the ropes to make it to his feet before the 10 count. Loco came charging and he was meet with a right hand holding Helbert's lucky horseshoe knocking Loco out for the 10 count. "I took that shoe off of my lucky mule just last week. I knew it would bring me luck," Helbert said.

"Big Yella and Golden Boy Tony Wright defeated Ken Steel and Scott Lee when Big Yella completed a sunset flip over the top rope on Steel to capture the pin. Scott tried to save Steel, but was detained by Wright.

Ace England retained his ACW television title in a return bout by defeating Lee after Lee missed a kick in the corner and England rolled him up for the pin.

"Foxxy Roxxy defeated Lionheart Jake Fountaine with a swanton bomb.

ACW, sponsored by We Care of Franklin County 220 Auto Sales and the Comfort Inn will return to Rocky Mount, after the first of the year.
