EDUCATION CREDITS

NOTE: The Educational Institute should send you a 1099T.
             The credit is limited by your Adjusted Gross Income.

I. Student Education Credit

   A. Hope Credit

A credit of up to$500 for each student with qualified expenses of $2000 or more for each student; up to three students for a maximum credit of $1500.
Claimed for only two taxable years for each eligible student. Two years of post secondary education (generally, the freshman or sophomore years of college). Must be in a program
that leads to a degree, certificate, or credential and taking at least one-half of the normal
full-time work load.
Must be free of any felony conviction for possessing or distributing a controlled substance.

   B. Lifetime Learning Credit

A credit of up to $1000 total for all students with a total of $5000 or more in qualified expenses.
Credit is not based on student work load. It can be for one or more courses and is not limited to students in the first two years of post secondary education; graduate level degree work is eligible. There is no limit on the number of years for the credit for each student.

   C. Qualified Expenses

Amounts paid for tuition and fees required for enrollment or
attendance for you, your spouse, or dependents you claim on your tax return.
Qualified expenses do not include amounts paid for :
Room and board,insurance,transportation or other similar 
personal,living, or family expenses. Books or equipment
(except as provided in regulations)
Any course or other education involving sports, games, or hobbies, unless such
course or other education is part of the student's degree program or (for the lifetime learning credit only)helps the student to acquire or improve job skills.

II.  Student Loan Interest Deduction

You can claim the student loan deduction if all five of the following apply:
1. You paid interest on a qualified student loan.
2. At least part of the interest paid was during the first 60 months
    that interest payments were required to be made.
3. Your filing status is any status except married filing separately.
4. Your total income is lessthan: 55,000 if single, head of 
     household, qualifying widow(er) $75,000 if married filing
     jointly.
5. You are not claimed as a dependent on anyone's tax return.

A. Qualified Student Loan

Any loan you took out to pay the qualified higher education expenses for yourself, your spouse, or anyone who was your dependent when the loan was taken out.

B. Qualified Higher Education Expenses

Generally includes tuition, fees, room and board, and related expenses such as books and supplies. The expenses must be for education in a degree, certificate, or similar program at an eligible educational institution.
An eligible education institution includes most colleges,universities, and certain vocational schools.

C. Eligible Student

Enrolled in a degree,certificate, or other program (including a program of study abroad that was approved for credit by the institution the student was enrolled) leading to a recognized
educational credential at an eligible educational institution, and carried at least half the normal full-time workload for the course of study your pursuing.
