Dalmatian Health

ZyWeb

T he health of any breed as got to be the defining factor of success amongst its breeders! NOT the show wins. So you may well ask, how successful have Dalmatian breeders been?
and, what genetic health problems are associated with Dalmatians? Have today's breeders done enough to eradicate the problems?

Dalmatians have two major health problems, Deafness and Hyperuricosuria (High Uric Acid)
Breeders and the clubs have done much to address the deafness issue and one of the clubs now has part of its code of conduct (NEDC) that you MUST NOT breed from a unilateral, Well done to them!

But sadly that is the ONLY health problem that has ANY data or survey records done for the breed.
Other countries collect a lot of information on the health of the breed, lets hope that one day we will catch up because problems do not go away unless dealt with!

Health problems are out there! but so are the means to screen dogs & bitches BEFORE they are bred from.
Those that breed puppies without health tests on the parents are leaving it all in the lap of the gods!
The reason they usually give for not doing so is - and I quote "its not in my breeding line" I wonder how they know that!! but at least it saves them a few hundred pounds! There are 2 things that are in the genetic makeup of ALL Dalmatians High Uric Acid & Deafness!

Click on the links to your right for more information on these inherited problems, and the solutions
available to breeders (if they choose to use them) There is also a link for you to submit ANY health issues you may have encounted with your Dalmatian.
