tea-break conversation consisted of reflections on last night's visit to the movies,
as opposed to the latest soap opera developments. Although devoted to just one town,
the story is a microcosm of the rise and fall of the British love affair with the cinema.

A Last Complete Performance was writtten and published by Ivor Buckingham and, with a
mass of fascinating detail, lovingly researched, chronicles the history of cinemas in his home town
of Watford, Hertfordshire. The book is exceedingly well-illustrated, with many photographs of long-
departed picture palaces, programme advertisements and stars of the silver screen.
