Rev D Quentin Bellamy

The Vicar

Rev'd D Quentin Bellamy

MA BMus (Wales) Cert Theol [Oxon]

Our Vicar is from Colwyn Bay. He holds degrees in both Music and Religious Studies from the University of Wales.

Following university he taught music at Rydal Preparatory School, Colwyn Bay, before becoming Organist & Choirmaster at The Church of the Holy Trinity, Llandudno. Encouraged by the Rector at the time, The Rev'd Canon Derek Richards, he decided to explore a vocation to the Sacred Priesthood, and he was accepted for training for ministry.

He entered Theological Training at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, Oxford in October 1987. In the course of his training he spent time on Sheffield's huge Manor Estate, and in his third year he was selected by the college to undertake a year of exchange study at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. During that time he experienced a 7.1 earthquake (17 October 1989 at 5.04pm - the "Loma-Prieta"); joined members of the North Californian Theatre Organ Society who were building a giant Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ at the High School Theatre; and he also met his wife to be, Kate Johnson. He was made Deacon at St Asaph Cathedral in 1990, and in 1991 he was ordained Priest. He served his title as Curate of Rhyl from 1990-94 with the Rev'd Prebendary Herbert Lloyd, now retired and living in the Parish of Prestatyn,  and so a happy association continues to this day.

Following four years in Rhyl, he was inducted as sixth Vicar of Llay. The years at Llay were very busy and filled with many adventures in ministry. In 1998, a parish exchange was made with Rev'd Chuck Stacy of St Mark's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, Los Olivos, California, and in 2001, both the Vicar and Pastor Kate were sent by the Church in Wales to the Diocese of Pretoria in South Africa, where for six months he was Interim Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Rustenburg.

Our Vicar is unashamedly an avid organ enthusiast, and still loves to play whenever the opportunity arises. Should you ever visit him in his study, there's every chance that he will give you a tune on his vast Wyvern digital organ!  He also enjoys listening to his organ CDs. In 1998 he established Chester & North East Wales Organists' & Choirmasters' Association which now has a membership of more than 100 persons. He also enjoys computers and surfing the Internet, cooking, and he has a keen interest in the liturgies of the Anglican Church throughout the world.

In the Diocese he is the Chaplain to the Retired Clergy Association.

Pastor Kate Johnson

 Rev'd Kate Johnson
BA BD PGCE.
Associate Priest

Rev'd Kate Johnson (Pastor Kate) comes from a very different background. Born in Tyler, Minnesota, her family settled in California. Pastor Kate also is a gifted musician, and studied at the California Lutheran University at Thousand Oaks, California. Kate comes from a Norwegian Lutheran family background and she is extremely proud of her heritage. She entered training at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary at Berkeley, California in 1990 and was heading into a full time ministry as a Lutheran Pastor. During this time, she and Rev Quentin met, and friendship blossomed! They were married at St Thomas' Church in Rhyl in August 1991.

Following her move to this country Pastor Kate studied for a degree in theology from the University of North Wales, Bangor and qualified as a teacher specialising in Religious Education, Music and Geography. She also studied to be a Methodist Local Preacher - being commissioned as such in St John's Methodist Church here in Prestatyn. She was ordained in the Lutheran Church in Great Britain in 1996 and following a brief period teaching in the Wrexham area, she was appointed Chaplain to Nightingale House, Wrexham.

Following a period of financial difficulties the hospice authorities most astoundingly declared the chaplaincy redundant. At this time however, the Bishop of St Asaph invited Pastor Kate to join the staff of the diocese and though a Lutheran Pastor she was "further ordained" in June 2003 (deacon) and December 14 (Priest). Pastor Kate comes to us with a great wealth of Pastoral experience which is founded upon a sure theological background and deep-rooted spirituality. Pastor Kate has special responsibility for Prestatyn's Church of the Holy Spirit, but she also ministers at Christ Church Parish Church on regular occasions.
