Gala 2010

The 2010 event was the best ever with the visit of a railbus which has not worked anywhere but its home line for the last 42 years and the introduction into service of a new driving trailer. There were record attendances too with very good customer feedback meaning that everyone had a most enjoyable weekend.

The DRB at Glyndyfrdwy (Neil Williams)

A diesel railbus which had never worked on another heritage railway since it was preserved in 1968 was the star attraction of the Gala in June 2010 .

German-built railbus 79964 was at Llangollen for one weekend only - arriving the day before the event, and returning home the day after. Built in 1957 by Wagon Und Maschinenbau in Germany the railbuses were designed to save branch lines which had little traffic. Unfortunately they were unable to do so and were declared surplus when still relatively new. Two were bought for the KWVR and have worked there ever since. 79964 is fitted with AEC power equipment and this was the first time that an AEC-engined railbus had tackled the gradients at Llangollen.

The gala saw the entry to service of class 108 trailer 56223, which had been recently obtained from the East Anglian Railway Museum. It was paired with class 127 51618, which appeared in a new lighter green livery.

Three other railcar sets were in action, consisting of examples of classes 104, 108 and the award-winning and unique Wickham. There was also the steam auto-train worked by GW Pannier 6430.

The pictures below give a flavour of the event.
