To comply with new regulations we have installed our own refuelling point at the end of our facility on the Llangollen Railway. As usual this was carried out using our own members and voluntary labour - as these pictures by Elizabeth Harland and Ian Bradbury show.

The base for the new fuel point was first dug out by hand. The new pump and tank is at the end of the siding which we occupy at the Pentrefelin Yard. Three units are stabled here and a fourth is kept in the shed which can be seen in the distance. |

The new tank is a fully bunded model with a built-in pump and meter. It was delivered to the Llangollen Loco Works and was tripped down to our site using a well wagon. As the new tank is mainly plastic it could be unloaded by hand. |

Placed on the ground the tank was checked for position - it was important that the installation did not foul any of the adjacent sidings nor be placed where any operator might be in a position of danger from moving trains. Once a position was fixed the planks were put in place which would form the shuttering for the concrete. |

As women have equal membership of Llangollen Railcars we allowed Elizabeth to put down her camera for a while and shovel some aggregate into buckets. You can see the main line to Carrog behind the fence in the background at the point where it is beginning its climb into the hills. |

The concrete base for the tank was mixed using a portable concrete mixer. It had to be made fairly thick to support the weight of the tank and its contents. |

Once poured up to the level of the shuttering the concrete base was puddled down to give a flat surface. |

Once the concrete was in place it was time for the Group members to engage in one of their favourite activities - eating! Group catering in winter is the stuff of legends. David produced a George Foreman grill on this occasion and we all ate a huge number of bacon and sausage butties. |

Everyone having eaten so much it was now time to go and inspect the new tank, a locked flap at the front gives access to the filler nozzle, which is the same type as used in garages. The tank is fitted with a total meter display as well as one which can be zeroed for each time a train is refuelled. |

Once the concrete had dried the tank was installed. A location cabinet was also fitted to the plinth into which was wired the electrical supply to work the pump as well as sensor-controlled lighting for the immediate area. A final touch were yellow warning panels. Our trains can now be refuelled as required as they leave the siding. The new installation also reduces the chances of environmental pollution caused by accidental spillage. |
