Did you know that the American Quarter Horse Association is the biggest horse breed registry in the world? Did you know that the gestation period for a mare is around 352 days? The average gestation period for most beef cattle breeds is 285 days. Did you know that the richest horserace in the world is held in Ruidoso,New Mexico? It's the All American Futurity for Quarter Horses and guarantees one million dollars to the winner. Cowboys call the leather protection for their legs chaps but pronounce it "shaps". The shorter chaps that only go down to slightly below the knees are called chinks. Buckaroo is a corruption of the Spanish word vaquero,meaning cowboy. Nowdays buckaroo is a term most often used to describe those cowboys that dress in the style of the 1800's Mexican vaquero montados. Other names used for the cowboy throughout history are cowpoke,,cowpuncher,& waddy. If the cowboy was also a horsebreaker for the "outfit" he might also be called a twister. Rodeo is the Spanish word for roundup.Ranch is a shortened version of the Spanish word rancho,while a very large ranch was often called an estancia by the Spanish speaking ranchers or rancheros.
