Hello..... Zoot and the Roots on the web - whatever next! Saw the band many times in and around York and also at a classic gig at The Marquee, Wardour Stret - got some photos somewhere! Why not release Cat Out The Bag on CD? Where do I send my cheque for the Geneva CD? Best wishes John

Hi Colvis,... I don't think miles would remember me; we only met briefly on a couple of occasions. I played sax in a band called Jive Alive we opened for Zoot and the Roots a few times, The Astoria Leeds, a poly or University somewhere and I think The International in Manchester. Chris Davis might (but then again probably not), he used to play with a jazz funk outfit called Flexible Stems (Pre-Zoots), in a pub where my wife (then girl friend) worked behind the bar. We use to let on and have boring muso conversation. That was before I left the rat race, bought a house on a hill in Scotland (Cross between Hamish Macbeth and Castaways), grew my hair long and fostered kids (I've got 7 at the moment, 14yrs-18yrs)....Anyway I haven't played seriously in about 8yrs so, to quote Jake Blues, "I'm on a mission from god"! I've started practising again and I'm looking to put together a band playing Brass based soul, James Brown, Arthur Conley, Blues Brothers stuff. I'm miles away from putting a band together though, I used to be good,> I'm now the best sax player in my bedroom! So I need 6-12months working on my instrument before I could consider playing with another musician! I got the Zoot and the Roots CD from you to see if their was anything I can crib from the brass section.....Cheers ....Cash.

Please could you let me know how I go about ordering a copy of the "Guardian Angels" CD. I re-discovered my illicit tape of Zoots live R1 gig recently and was playing it tonight, which prompted me to search the internet to see if there was any reference the guys. Suffice to say, I was stunned to find a link to your site only third on the search list..I followed Zoots for quite a while until a move away from York led to me losing touch. Lots of gigs in York, Leeds, Harrogate, Scarborough and of course the legendary MARQUEE (my friends & I still reminisce about that one & the "milk train" journey home to York after). Do any of the other Zoot recordings survive and are they available (on CD if Poss) as my R1 gig tape and my copy of "Cat Out The Bag" are getting a bit faded. They probably wont have a bl**dy clue who I am but pass on my regards to Miles & Gav, do you have any news of the other Zoots apart from Snake --- we know where he's been, having spotted him on the box stacks of times.....Regards David Richardson

Tracked you down via the wonders of yahoo! I was a regular at Harrogate gigs (The Lounge Hall - what a venue!!) in the mid-80's whilst at school at Harrogate Grammar School. Also, I'm fairly sure I once saw the band playing at a ball at one of the Oxford colleges - although I may be getting confused with Buddy Curtess and the Grasshoppers - sacrilege! I still have the Radio 1 session on cassette - recently rediscovered in my collection. I would like to buy copies of the two Zoot and the Roots you mention. Please send more info and I'll send you a cheque.

Thanks,
Jonathan Molloy

Hello Colvis,

My name is Grant Kirkhope or "Dogtagnion" as Mr.Gilderdale used to call
me.I used to play Trumpet in Zoot in the good old days ....... blimey
was it that long ago !

I was just typing rubbish into my search engine and I thought I wonder
what Miles and the lads are up too and I came across your site.I can't
believe there are people still wanting to buy the "Cat out the bag"
stuff !

God when I think back I must have been in Zoot for 7 or 8 years , maybe
longer.I must admit it did teach me alot of good stuff ........ like no
matter how shite the audience were we would always go for it.

I'm now living in Ashby-de-la-Zouch working as a composer for a video
games company called Rare Ltd, not quite the same as "The Duchess" in
Leeds on a Monday night.

Oh well I just thought I'd say hello,

See ya,

Grant.

Hey up Colvis,

I've been thinking about any fuuny stories from the Zoot days and one
has sprung to mind.

We were doing one of our sponsered tours ( I think it was Heineken ) and
part of the deal was we had to play places that did n't usually have
bands on.

We turned up at some holiday camp in North Wales and proceeded to set up
the gear outside as it was summer.Everything was going along as usual
when this van turns up with the "Care Bears" logos all over it, out gets
Uncle Roy or whatever his bloody name was and tells us that they are
also booked to do a performance for all the kids.

It's like ..... Zoot are supporting the bloody "Care Bears" ...... we
could n't believe it.Anyway they get all their shite out , massive bear
suits that the "actors" wear and loads of PA stuff which included quite
alot off radio mike stuff so as the actors can speak from inside the
suits .

At this time Miles was using a guitar transmitter ( Trantec ) and by a
stroke of luck we found that it was transmitting on the same frequency
as one of the Care Bears mikes.

We attached a mike to Miles' guitar transmitter and hid in the van.Every
time Uncle Roy said something and left a gap Miles shouted TITS down the
mike ...... we could hear it echoing round where the kiddies were sat
...... Uncle Roy was frantically trying to work out where it was coming
from . We all had a go , poor old Uncle Roy could n't work out what was
going on , we were all pissing ourselves in the Van , the whole bloody
thing was shaking about as we were falling about .

Ahh ....... the good old days !

Grant.

Dear Colvis

I can't believe how easy it was to find a Zoot site. I used to go to see the band at the Central pub (or was it the Central Station?) in Leeds with my flat mate and his girlfriend ( who is now my wife and mother of my kids. It's a long story...). I can honestly say they are still the best band I've ever seen live, and we have great memories of Dogtagnion, Uncle Bastard ( "why's he called Uncle Bastard? - 'cos he's my Uncle!"), Doctor Vibes (gun him down with your guitar), and of course Snake Davis. What happened to you all? Is Snake still playing? What were your real names? Who do I make the cheque payable to for the live album? Was it really that long ago ?!

Richard Milward

Colvis,

Thanks for getting the CDs to me so quickly.  I've been dancing round the
house all weekend!

Thanks again

Claire

Hi Colvis,

I have found your site after a search of the net for Zoots, having just
viewed some broadcast tapes of Z n R I shot at the Marquee of the boys.
(Sadly only Tapes 1 & 3)  I also shot the Video of the single "This Heart"
directed by Dave Secker and many nights when the boys (and Min) were
playing in and around London, they would kip down at my place in Eltham.
This led to some great times. I also have a bootleg tape (from FOH which I
nicked) from their gig at The Tramshed in Woolwich when they were supported
by Bruce Foxton 1000 men. I have been to a number of Blueflies gigs both in
York and elsewhere around the country. One memorable time when the boys
were backing Johnnie "Guitar" Watson. On the first show (I can't remember
if it was Isleworth or Camden) he was jet lagged and asked Miles to do a
bit! Well of course Miles blew him away and there were no further
invitations Haha, they only had a couple of hours rehearsal prior to the
first gig too.

Can you advise of any forthcoming dates, and pass on my best wishes, both
for the recent accolades and success and the new family.

Best wishes

Big Kev!

boy...as this website brought some memories flooding
back...

1st saw you guys at the station? on wellington street
in Leeds before moving across town to the duchess, I
remember the memorable coach trip up to TX45 gig in
Newcastle for the channel 4 show (STILL GOT THE VID

jumper with black hair jumpin up n down like a
complete fool!)...Monday nights as an art student in
Leeds were fun, never missed a leeds gig & got across
to harrogate once or twice (we were poor students with
no car!)...

Now living in Denver, Colorado and listening to some
'top' blues music in my local bars...off to see tracy
chapman in a few weeks.

just sorting out those large CD's and came
across...Guardian Angles of the Groove album...bringin
